Staples
Staples are nutritious, whole grains & beans without preservatives, full of Vitamins, Minerals, Fiber,
Complex Carbohydrates, Vegetable Oils and Protein for a fraction of the
cost of processed foods. These healthy foods are what our great grandparents
enjoyed. Staples are used for making whole grain breads, beans and rice,
oatmeal, cereals and hearty stews and soups. They can even be ground finely to make
baby foods, flours and meals or processed into grain, bean or soy milks, tofu etc. See,
the free staples recipes on our 3
online books Recipes and Trail Foods I, II and III. We also
have a growing cookbook page with a number of helpful Cookbooks
for your review. You will need a grain
mill, oils or fats,
seasonings, some additional meats, poultry or TVP for flavorings and some fresh greens
or Sprout Seeds for a healthy diet.
Ezekiel Bread Mixes are available, composed of whole grains
and beans following the Biblical formula, which contain all 8
essential amino acids to form complete protein, thus producing a
high protein, high nutrition survival food. Basic Staples are low cost, no frills survival foods perfect
for emergency preparedness and disaster relief food supply. See, FEMA
units! Staples have the longest shelf life, because they are
the least processed of all foods. Dairy Products such as milk and
eggs have 5-8 year shelf life unopened. Keep an emergency
food pantry stocked with essentials for your family and friends in case of
disruptions in the food supply or in transportation of food stuffs to your local
area, crop failure or contamination, increasing food prices and/or
job or income loss. Our Basic Staples FEMA units are designed
following FEMA recommendations for one year food supplies for
individuals or families. You are free to use the FEMA chart and
design your own units based upon your families' food preferences.
The price would change, based upon your preferences, but you are
assured that you will have enough, should the necessity arise. We
have tried to show, that preparedness, does not have to cost a
fortune. Disaster preparedness takes some of the fear of the
future out of the way and it is prudent to put away, while costs
are low for times when they may be high or foods may be inaccessible.
Don't panic -- do prepare.
We have several pages which feature staples in
various packaging.

Grains &
Beans packed for long term storage.
Regular Buckets (RB) and Super Pails (SP) are
oxygen absorbed in six gallon
USDA approved gasketed plastic buckets,
stackable, with a handle for carrying. Protected against insect and bacterial
growth by removing oxygen leaving only nitrogen and carbon dioxide or by vacuum
sealing in thick Mylar Liners and from rodents and wild animals by the food
grade plastic bucket. Food Grade Plastic will not off gas into your food supply!
(Staples weight: varies per RB or SP. 6 gallons of feathers would weigh much
less than 6 gallons of wheat.)
Each pail has added to it an oxygen
absorber to remove residual oxygen and to better insure long term freshness
and nutritional integrity.
· Low moisture content, below
13% to assure long term freshness.
· Easy storage. Easily stacked
in a closet, basement or spare room.
· Regular Buckets are reusable for
food storage, carrying water or household and farm use.
* Super Pails (SP) are the same as nitro pails,
but have a thick metal/plastic liner for resealing foods. The
foods are vacuum sealed inside each Mylar Liner. Then the gasket
lids are hammered in place. The thick
Mylar Liner has three advantages: more easily reseals with
electrical ties, tape or clamps, is an extra barrier against
moisture if you live in a humid area and is a second line of defense
against oxygen, in case of loss of bucket integrity through
cracking. * Optional Gamma Seal Lids screw on and off the 6
gallon pails after the gasket lid has been removed and are reusable. The come in several colors and are
highly recommended for use after the pails have been opened. We
recommend one Gamma Seal Lid for every type of food in buckets that
you purchase. For instance if you purchase 7 buckets of Wheat,
7 of Beans, 7 of Powdered Milk; you would need 3 Gamma Seal Lids
(one for each type). If you have several types of beans, you might
want more, if you anticipate having a bucket of pinto beans open at
the same time you have a bucket of lentils open; therefore you would
need one more Gamma Seal Lid.
· Long shelf life. Unopened
a minimum of 7 years at ambient room temperature 75 degrees F. (Factors which influence shelf life include temperature,
humidity and light. The cooler, dryer and darker the longer the shelf life. Keep pails
out of direct sunlight.) Shelf life unopened extends up to 20 years when
stored under ideal conditions. Once opened RB or SP of grain or beans has
about one year shelf
life without refrigeration. You would need to protect your food supply from
insects, moths and creatures that like to eat grains and/or beans.
· Ease of transport. Fourteen nitro pails can be carried in most cars and lifted by teenagers or adults.
Packaging
Definitions
Bulk, NP, SP, Gamma
Seal Lids, #10 cans, size #2.5 cans, RB and Mylar Zip Bags.
Bulk Foods -- are packed
in bags or boxes and are not packed for long term storage. Average
Shelf Life on bulk grains and beans is 1 year at 75 degrees F., if
you protect them from insects and small creatures.
RB -- "RB"
stands for Regular Bucket. Air is composed of oxygen, nitrogen and
carbon dioxide. This is a white food grade, plastic, 6 gallon bucket with
a gasket lid (air tight) and handles. Foods are packed inside with oxygen
absorbers added. Once all the oxygen has been absorbed, then only nitrogen and carbon dioxide
remain in the bucket with the foods. This process provides an oxygen free environment
for long term storage. The gasket lid is hammered into place
forming an air tight seal. Sometimes, with the use of the oxygen
absorbers, a concavity can occur in the pliable plastic bucket. Over
time, a crack has been reported in some of the buckets. For this
reason, we recommend RB storage for 2-7 years. It's advantage is low
cost. SP -- A Super Pail is the same
food grade white plastic pail as a 6 gallon Nitro Pail (NP) or 6
gallon RB. It has the same
gasket lid as a Nitro Pail. The difference is that inside the
Super Pail there is a thick Mylar or plastic liner, which has been
vacuum sealed around the food product and Oxygen
Absorbers have been added to the bucket. The Mylar or thick
plastic liner can be resealed after the lid has been
removed. Super Pails should be used for maximum shelf life
and as an extra humidity barrier in humid climates. They are
recommended for 7-20 year shelf life and you have an extra barrier
against oxygen should a crack appear in the bucket. Your foods would
still be preserved in the vacuum sealed Mylar liner. Gamma Seal Lids --
Gamma Seal Lids come in 5 colors. They are recommended to add to
your order, because after the gasket lid has been removed, they
can be screwed on or off of either your SP or RB bucket. They are
reusable and form an air tight seal. We recommend one Gamma Seal
for each type of food you order. For instance, if you purchase
4 buckets of Powdered milk and 5 buckets of Wheat, it is recommended that you also purchase 2 Gamma Seal lids, one for the
open bucket of milk and one for the open bucket of wheat. Gamma
Seal Lids fit on size 4.25 gallon buckets, 5 gallon buckets and 6
gallon buckets or any bucket with a 12 inch diameter opening.
#10 Cans -- Hold about 13 cups dehydrated foods or
1 gallon. Each enamel lined can packed with food comes with a snap on lid for use after opening.
Each can contains one oxygen absorber. The cans are double enamel
inside and out.
#2.5 Cans -- Hold about 30
ounces volume packed. Each enamel lined can packed with food comes with a snap on lid for use after opening.
Each can contains one oxygen absorber. The cans are double enamel
inside and out. Mylar
Zip Bag -- This is a 1lb. or 5 lb. pliable thick
Mylar bag container with an oxygen absorber packed inside with the
foods. Once opened, the Mylar Zip Bag is self sealing with it's
own zipper. Benefits include strong light weight packaging,
resealable, less expensive shipping due to less weight in Mylar
versus metal cans, and can be used where cans are forbidden in remote
camping, hiking and backpacking areas and along some water ways. Packed
for long term storage and self sealing. Perfect for emergency
preparedness, camping, boating, yachts, backpacking, and scouting
foods or where ever storage space is limited. Packaging
Supplies -- Oxygen Absorbers, Buckets, Gamma Seal Lids, Poly
and Mylar Liners, Bucket Wrenches, and Lid Removers are available
for sale, if you would like package your own foods for long term
storage. We also sell #10 cans and Can
Sealers. If you are purchasing empty cans, they come with
metal lids for sealing. You would need to consider purchasing
plastic lids also, for use after opening a filled can. Shipping
Information -- Most of our foods ship by UPS or Fed Ex. UPS
offers a good discount at 200 lb. And an additional discount at 500
lb. At 1,000 lb. the rate goes up slightly, so we divide 1,000 lb
orders or more into two 500-999 lb. orders. Pallet shipping is
available for 2,000 lb or more. There is a discount for 4,000 lb.
using our Pool Truck, which goes to most areas near East/West
Interstates. Commercial Freight is available for most other pallet
shipments. Remote areas might not be served well by either and would
require either UPS delivery if available or shipment to the nearest
local delivery point. You would have to meet the truck and transport
further to your end destination. We
can fit up to 48 Buckets of foods plus cans on most pallets. To
assure that your foods arrive with none or minimal damage we
recommend not over filling a pallet and will break one large pallet
into two smaller pallets, if necessary, to protect your food supply
during transport. It is prudent not to exceed 2,300 lb/pallet. If
your food proposal weighs 1,500 to 1,999 lb we will give you a quote
for both UPS and Commercial Freight. Pool
Truck service starts at 2,000 lb. Commercial
Freight quotes are much more expensive for residential delivery than
for commercial delivery. You may want to have your foods delivered
to a freight terminal or any commercial address with a fork lift and
loading dock who is willing to receive your order for you. You would
then pick up your order there and transport it to your home. The
difference between residential delivery and commercial delivery can
be between $250.00 to $600.00 savings/pallet in shipping charges. If
you are purchasing 55 gallon or 15 gallon Water Drums, for Water
Storage, please include them on your pallet order, since it will
save you a small fortune in S&H. Liquids
in buckets such as Clover Honey, Un-sulfured Molasses and liquid
Lecithin must be shipped with pallet orders via truck; since UPS
will not carry them. A Gamma Seal Lid is recommended for any liquid
packed in a bucket! More
