Doulton/British Berkefeld® ELIMINATE BACTERIAL MITOSIS AND "GROW-THROUGH'' 

Mitosis is the name for the usual method of bacterial cell division. This division is characterized by resolving the chromatin of the cell nucleus into a threadlike form that condenses into chromosomes, each of which separates longitudinally into two parts, one part or each chromosome being retained in each of the two new daughter cells. When conditions of growth (cell division) are right (proper environmental conditions temperature, pressure, etc.) and sufficient nutrients, the "threadlike forms" can penetrate the ceramic structure of other ceramic shells and create bacterial cells on the inside of the element.

Super Sterasyl grade filter elements incorporate pure silver into the porous ceramic shell to prevent "grow-through" from occurring.

Super Sterasyl Sub-Micron Ceramic Filter

At the core of the sub-micron ceramic filter is the most basic of elements ... EARTH. This is the
same substance which artisans, first in Asia then in Europe, refined into exquisite porcelain and pottery of the Shoguns and Kings. This material is Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.), a fossil substance, made up of very small silicon shells left by trillions of microscopic, one celled algae, called diatoms. Today there are over 1,500 uses for diatomaceous earth, from abrasives for toothpaste, filtering agents for water and milk, heat insulators for kilns, to polishing agents in nail polishes, and much more.

The microscopic pores of a ceramic filter element makes it an extremely efficient filter for the removal of particulate matter and fine sediment from water. Minute particulate matter will quickly plug media style filters, but the ceramics have the added benefit of being cleanable and re-usable. With nominal particulate filtration rating efficiencies of >98% down to 0.2 - 0.3 microns (Spectrum Labs), >99.7% at 0.3 - 0.5 microns, 99.9% at 0.5 - 0.8 microns and 99.99% at 0.9 microns, this is one powerful filter system.

The Super Sterasyl element utilizes the latest technological advances of ceramic filtration by
incorporating pure silver impregnation into the porous inner ceramic shell to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi. Furthermore, the Super Sterasyl ceramic filter element contains activated carbon filling, which removes chemical and organic compounds from the water while also improving taste.

ADSORPTION & ABSORPTION PROCESSES

Removal of contaminants with activated carbon is a surface phenomenon known as adsorption, resulting from the molecular attraction of substances to the surface of the carbon, as the bottle is pressed, and the source water is forced through the filter.

The rate of adsorption is determined by the quality and volume of carbon used. The flow rate, or time of exposure through the filter, has been calculated to yield the greatest volume removal of toxic chemicals caused by industrial and agricultural pollution.

This exclusive filter also incorporates proprietary absorbing media that are impregnated into the micro-porous filter for the ionic absorption of pollutants into the filter such as aluminum,
arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, zinc, and other dangerous heavy metals. (See test verification).

The high-tech porous-plastic micro-filter system contains thousands of interconnected omni-directional pores. The "Torturous Path" structure of these pores gives it a unique

MTBE FILTER        More Information on MTBE Filter  New Filters (PF-4) also remove, Chlorine, Floride, Lead and arsnic. Set of 4 screws into the Regular British Berkefeld 4X4 Unit. Super Sterasyl Filters work in the upper chamber, MTBE PF-4 Filters in the lower chamber available in the regular British Berkefeld and also the Big British Berkefeld.

MTBE is an acronym for Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether. It is a gasoline additive that has been in wide use since the Clean Air Act of 1990 mandated that MTBE or other oxygenates be added to gasoline. Most oil companies choose to use MTBE and according to the State of California's paper entitled "Public Health Goal For Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether in Drinking Water" since 1997 it has become the second most heavily produced chemical in the United States (roughly 16 gallons per capita is produced each year)! According to Water officials interviewed on 60-Minutes, one cup of MTBE (about the same amount found in each gallon of gasoline) can contaminate five million (5,000,000) gallons of water and make it undrinkable.

Contamination of groundwater with MTBE is a rapidly growing problem in 49 U.S. states. In drinking water, even trace amounts of MTBE can cause taste and odor problems, which may lead to nausea and dizziness. The potential long-term health effects of MTBE are not understood at this time, however, initial studies indicate MTBE may cause kidney and liver problems. MTBE removal from water is a challenge because it is very soluble in water and must compete with other organics for binding sites on the filter medium. These other contaminants (BTEX - butane toluene ethylene xylene and TOC - total organic carbons) are adsorbed more readily, and MTBE often slips by standard carbon filters, ending up in the filtered water. The PFE-1 filter has been specifically designed to remove MTBE from drinking water when used in conjunction with a British Berkefeld gravity filter system. The media within the Super Sterasyl filters, in the upper chamber, capture the more strongly adsorbed BTEX and TOC's. This permits the downstream PFE-1, secured as a post filter, to more efficiently remove MTBE.
